Gunwong Bonpuri is a Korean myth about the god of war, Gunwongshin, meaning 'Chronicles of the Gods of War.' This myth shares many similarities with the 9th-century legend of 'Jakjaegeon.' The story begins with the dragon kings of the East Sea and the West Sea engaged in fierce battles over control of the sea. The East Sea dragon king was gradually losing the battle, and his son, Choribonggi, went to seek the help of General Wang. General Wang is a colossal being born as the son of the heavenly king Jeoseok and the earthly king Jeoseok, standing 3 meters tall with iron arms and legs. Although General Wang was afraid of water, he was persuaded by Choribonggi to participate in the battle against the East Sea dragon king. Ultimately, General Wang defeats the West Sea dragon king and marries the daughter of the East Sea dragon king.

Variants

Gunwong Bonpuri is a myth edited by a Japanese mythologist in the early 20th century, with other versions focusing solely on the genealogy of Gunwongshin. This myth shares many similarities with the 'Geotaji' myth and the 'Jakjaegeon' myth. In the 'Geotaji' myth, Geotaji kills a monk at the request of a ghost with a bow, and the ghost allows him to marry his daughter. In the 'Jakjaegeon' myth, Jakjaegeon kills a ghost with a bow at the request of the West Sea dragon king and, in return, receives the dragon king's daughter. These similarities suggest that Gunwong Bonpuri and the Jakjaegeon myth have influenced each other.
