Origin & Background
Gawp (가웁) is a cosmological concept in Jeju Island shamanism that represents the boundary between heaven and earth, humans and non-humans, and life and death. In the Jeju creation myth, it is said that Gawp is generated in its original mixed state between heaven and earth.
The Legend
Gawp is a deity that establishes the boundary between humans and non-humans, formed during the process where Daebyeolwang paralyzes the tongues of animals, plants, and rocks so that they can no longer speak, physically separating life and death. Additionally, in the Buldomaji ritual, the shaman (simbang) creates Gawp between Saengbulhalmang (the goddess of childbirth) and Gusaemsunghalmang (the goddess of dead children), playing a role in spreading diseases that kill babies and bring them under her control. In Durin-gut, the shaman strives to create Gawp between the human patient and the malicious dokkaebi that has caused their madness to treat mental illness.
