The legend of the origin of the Goryeo dynasty is a mythical story about the ancestors of Wang Geon, who unified the Korean Peninsula during the Later Three Kingdoms period.
The Legend
According to the 'Pyeonnyeon Tongrok', the origin of the Goryeo dynasty begins in Goguryeo. A figure named Ho-gyeong was born on Baekdu Mountain and, after traveling to various places, settled in Songak (present-day Kaesong) and started a family. He wished to become the king of the mountains by marrying a widow mountain spirit he encountered while hunting on Pyeongna Mountain. Ho-gyeong's son, Gangchung, planted a pine tree on Songaksan to fulfill the prophecy that his descendants would unify the Three Han. He had a son named Boyuk, and Boyuk's daughter, Jin-ui, married a member of the Tang dynasty royal family and gave birth to a child named Jacheopgeon. Jacheopgeon married Yongnyeo and had a son named Wanglun, and Wanglun's son, Wang Geon, would go on to establish Goryeo.
