Description
에밀레종 설화는 신라의 성덕대왕신종 주조와 관련된 구전 설화로, 종을 만들던 중 실패가 잇따르자 한 아이를 시주받아 쇳물에 넣어 완성했다는 이야기가 전해진다. 완성된 종이 울릴 때 '에밀레(어미 때문에)'라는 아이의 울음소리처럼 들린다고 하여 '에밀레종'이라는 이름이 붙여졌다. 이 설화는 인신공양 모티프를 담고 있으며, 실제 성덕대왕신종은 771년에 완성된 통일신라의 범종이다. 그러나 학계에서는 인신공양이 실제로 있었던 근거는 없으며, 후대에 덧붙여진 설화로 간주된다.

The Legend
The story goes that when they kept failing to make the bell, they offered a child and placed him in the molten metal to complete it. When the completed bell rings, it sounds like the cry of a child saying 'Emille (because of the mother)', which is the core of the legend.
In Popular Culture
This legend contains a motif of human sacrifice, and the actual Seongdeok Great King's Bell is a bronze bell completed in 771 during the Unified Silla period. However, scholars consider that there is no evidence that human sacrifice actually occurred, and it is regarded as a legend added later.
