The Legend

Durin-gut (or Michin-gut, Chuneun-gut) is a ritual in Korean shamanism from the southern part of Jeju Island aimed at treating mental illnesses. This ritual is rooted in the belief of traditional Korean shamanism that evil spirits enter the body and cause diseases. Durin-gut seeks to expel these evil spirits to heal mental disorders, and it is often believed that a being called 'yeonggam' is attached to the patient's body. Yeonggam is described as a being similar to a dokkaebi that is obsessed with human women.

In Popular Culture

Durin-gut was commonly practiced until the 1980s, but due to the introduction of modern psychiatry, it is now rarely performed. A video of the Durin-gut ritual filmed in 1984 remains an important resource for understanding the procedures of this ritual.
