The Legend

Dongti (Dongto, Sinbeol) refers to the punishment of gods in Korean mythology, which is said to occur primarily through shaman deities. For example, in one myth, a man used a Jangseung (a traditional Korean guardian totem) as fuel, foolishly believing that the Jangseung would not take revenge on him. As a result, he faced the wrath of the Jangseung, or Dongti, and quickly died from several fatal diseases. In a similar myth, those who destroyed the village altar, Sena-dang, suddenly fell ill and died due to the Dongti of the village guardian deity, Sena-shin. Additionally, there are myths where sacred trees, such as Sinmok or Dangsu-namu, cause fatal diseases. Household deities, known as Gashin, can also invoke Dongti, particularly when objects representing them are damaged, animals represented by the goddess Yeomshin die, or land represented by the deity Teojushin is sold without permission. Notably, the goddess of toilets, Cheuksin, is one of the well-known entities that can cause Dongti; if her long hair touches a human who has not coughed three times, that human will fall ill with an incurable disease and die.
