The Legend

Diyu (地獄) is known in Chinese mythology as the realm of the dead or 'hell'. It is formed based on the Buddhist concept of Naraka, traditional Chinese beliefs about the afterlife, and various popular extensions and reinterpretations of these two traditions. Diyu is generally depicted as an underground maze, consisting of several layers and chambers, where souls are taken to atone for the sins they committed while alive. The number of layers in Diyu varies according to interpretations in Buddhism and Taoism; some mention 'the ten courts of hell', while other legends refer to 'eighteen hells'. Each court deals with different aspects of atonement and various punishments, and in most legends, it is said that sinners undergo horrific tortures and after experiencing 'death', they are restored to their original state, only to have the torture repeated.

In Popular Culture

The modern reception of Diyu can be seen in the temples of Fengdu (丰都) and Mount Tai (泰山), which have been reconstructed as tourist attractions. These places have developed into tourist sites that include artistic depictions of hell and the afterlife. Additionally, folk religious writings such as the Taiwanese novel 'Journeys to the Under-World' (地下世界的旅行) contain narratives where new hells with new punishments are created or existing hells are transformed with modernized punishments. Thus, Diyu is evolving in response to changes in modern society and is being reinterpreted in various cultural contexts.
