A deity from the folklore of Korea. Cheuksin (Korean: 측신; Hanja: 廁神) is the toilet goddess of Korean mythology.

The Legend

Cheoksin (측신; Hanja: 廁神) is known as the goddess of toilets in Korean mythology. She is primarily considered a part of the household deity belief and is relatively lesser-known among the gods of living spaces. Cheoksin is believed to reside in the toilet. She is said to appear as a young maiden with long hair measuring 150 cm. It is said that she was banished to the toilet by the supreme god Cheonjiwang and the kitchen goddess Jowangsin, and in her anger, she spent time counting her hair. To avoid her wrath, Koreans would refrain from entering the toilet on days that included the number 6, specifically the 6th, 16th, and 26th of the lunar calendar.

In Popular Culture

Cheoksin is considered the most dangerous household deity in Korea and is believed to dislike children. It was thought that if a child fell into the toilet, they would die before reaching adulthood, and offerings had to be made to appease her. Cheoksin is also regarded as a deity of legal punishment and is known to follow the commands of the household deity Seongjusin. Unlike other household deities, rituals or offerings for Cheoksin were not performed, as she was considered a malevolent being.
