The Legend
Cheonji-wang bon-puri is a Korean creation myth passed down in the southern part of Jeju Island, beginning with the story of Cheonji-wang descending to Earth, marrying a woman, and giving birth to twin sons, Daebyeol-wang and Sobyeol-wang. They ascend to the sky, destroy two suns and two moons, and participate in a contest to grow flowers. The world under Sobyeol-wang's rule is filled with evil, but Daebyeol-wang goes to the world of the dead to establish justice.
Variants
Cheonji-wang bon-puri has several variations, with 20 different versions known to researchers since the 1930s. These versions share an overall narrative structure but exhibit various differences in details. These differences may reflect regional variations between northern and southern Jeju Island.
In Popular Culture
Cheonji-wang bon-puri is still performed in a ritual context in Jeju Island, recited during the large-scale ritual known as 'Daegut'. This ritual begins with 'Chogamje', which invites all gods, and the creation myth provides the historical and mythological context of the ritual. This myth also plays an important role in various rituals related to the traditional religious life of the residents of Jeju Island.
