Origin & Background
Chasa Bonpuri is a Korean myth passed down from Jeju Island, telling the story of how the god of death, Gangrim, came to be. This myth is one of the most well-known myths on the Korean Peninsula and features characteristics of a typical heroic epic.
The Legend
Chasa Bonpuri deals with the process of Gangrim becoming the god of death. The protagonist of the story, Gangrim, embarks on a journey to the afterlife to learn about the deaths of the three sons of King Biomu. Gangrim meets various gods and spirits while searching for the path to the afterlife, and ultimately encounters the god of death, Yeomra. From Yeomra, Gangrim learns the cause of death and, in the process, comes to accept his own fate.
Variants
Chasa Bonpuri is transmitted in several versions, including the 1933 Chesa Bonpuri and the 2006 and 2008 Cheseo Bonpuri. Each version shows differences in details, but the basic storyline is similar.
In Popular Culture
Chasa Bonpuri is used as part of the Siwangmaji ritual, which is a ceremony honoring the gods of death. This myth contains themes of Gangrim extending human lifespans and wishing for him to show mercy to those he harvests. The recitation of Chasa Bonpuri is performed in an epic song format, with a shaman narrating the story to the rhythm of a janggu.
