The Legend

Bonpuri is a narrative recited during Korean shamanistic rituals performed in Jeju Island, telling the origins of gods and the process by which they attained divine status. Bonpuri aims to invite the gods to participate and to please them. There are three main types of bonpuri: general bonpuri, village god bonpuri, and ancestor god bonpuri. General bonpuri deals with the origins of gods worshipped throughout Jeju Island, while village god bonpuri tells the stories of the guardian deities of specific local communities. Ancestor god bonpuri addresses the guardian deities of specific family lineages or professions, but it is not necessarily connected to ancestors.
