The Legend
The name Arang is composed of two words: 'Ara' meaning 'top' and 'Anga' meaning 'body'. According to the legend, the god Krishna appeared before King Murda-dwaja of the Haihaya dynasty disguised as a Brahmin. The pious king offered to provide any darkshina he desired. The disguised Brahmin demanded half of the king's body, and the king immediately ordered that he be cut in half to be given as darkshina. Just before being cut in half, a tear fell from the king's eye. The Brahmin asked if that tear was a sign of regret for accepting his request, and the king replied that it was not, stating that he also wished for the half of his body that he had not requested to be part of the darkshina. Then Krishna revealed himself and blessed the king for his faith.
