Description

한국 설화에 등장하는 Spirit. In the history of modern and contemporary Korea, especially between the late 19th century and the 19

Origin & Background

In modern and contemporary Korean history, particularly from the late 19th century to the 1980s, there was a series of movements aimed at eliminating indigenous shamanism and folk religions. In Korean, this movement is called the misin tapa undong (미신 타파 운동), which regarded indigenous shamanism and everything associated with it as 'superstition.' This term was adopted in Japan in the late 19th century and was emphasized by Christian missionaries targeting Korea's indigenous religions.

The Legend

This movement began in the 1890s and reached its peak during the new community movements in 20th century Korea. The movement destroyed the beliefs and sanctuaries of most indigenous religions, which were primarily replaced by Christianity.

In Popular Culture

Since the 1980s, traditional religions and shamanism in Korea have experienced a revival. Starting in the 1990s, shamans began to be regarded as 'cultural transmitters,' and today, Korean shamanism is recognized as a legitimate religion.
