Description

이라크 설화에 등장하는 Demon. Ugallu, the "Big Weather-Beast", (Sumerian inscribed 𒌓𒃲𒆷/UD.GAL.LA, Akkadian: ūmu rabû, meaning "

Origin & Background

Ugallu dates back to the early 2nd millennium BCE and appears in protective amulets and apotropaic yellow clay or tamarisk figurines from the 1st millennium BCE.

The Legend

Ugallu is a storm demon with a lion's head, whose name means 'great day' or 'great storm', and is one of the ud-demons that personifies moments of divine intervention in human life. Ugallu's function is to intervene at moments of disaster to save people from death. He is compared to gods associated with the day, and his rituals are primarily performed at night.

Variants

The iconography of Ugallu has changed over time. In the Neo-Assyrian version, he is depicted with eagle talons and a short skirt, wielding a dagger and a mace in a threatening posture above his head. Two recovered amulets show Ugallu with human feet and wearing a long robe, with the latter version being quite rare and the former version being much more common.
