Origin & Background

In ancient Mesopotamian religion, Tiamat was considered a cosmic sea that formed Babylonian mythology by uniting with Abzu. Tiamat plays a significant role in the creation myth recorded in the Enuma Elish, which means 'from above.' This myth was written in the Akkadian Babylonian dialect in the 2nd millennium BCE in southern Mesopotamia. Tiamat mixes her waters with those of Abzu to give birth to the first gods.

The Legend

Tiamat is depicted as a female and possesses both anthropomorphic and zoomorphic characteristics in various ways. As the mother of the gods, she instigates a war when Abzu violently transforms due to the noise of the gods and attempts to destroy them. Tiamat creates various monsters for battle and chooses a new companion, Kingu, to whom she grants the Tablet of Destinies. Ultimately, the storm god Marduk defeats her and splits her body to create the elements of the universe.

In Popular Culture

Tiamat became widely known in popular culture as a multi-headed dragon in role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons in the 1970s. Additionally, she appears under the name 'Titanus Tiamat' in 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' and is fully represented as a serpentine dragon in the graphic novel 'Godzilla Dominion' from 'Godzilla vs Kong.'
