Origin & Background

Typhon is one of the most dangerous beings in ancient Greek mythology, said to be the son of Gaia and Tartarus. However, some sources mention that Typhon is the son of Hera or a child of Cronus. Typhon and his mate Echidna are known to be the ancestors of many famous monsters.

The Legend

Typhon challenged Zeus for dominion over the universe, and the two beings engaged in a great battle. Zeus defeated Typhon using his thunderbolts, and the defeated Typhon was either thrown into Tartarus or buried beneath Mount Etna. The myth of Typhon is part of the Greek succession myth, explaining the process by which Zeus becomes the ruler of the gods.
