Origin & Background

In Greek mythology, Medusa is one of the three Gorgons, typically depicted as a woman with living snakes instead of hair. Her appearance is so horrifying that anyone who looks at her turns to stone. Medusa and her Gorgon sisters, Euryale and Stheno, are usually described as the daughters of the sea god Phorcys and his sister Ceto, with only Medusa being mortal among the three.

The Legend

Medusa was beheaded by the Greek hero Perseus. Perseus used her head as a weapon, which was later given to Athena and adorned her shield. In ancient Greece, the image of Medusa's head appeared on the Gorgoneion, a device used to ward off evil. According to Hesiod and Aeschylus, she lived and died near Sarpedon in the region of Cistene. The 2nd-century BC writer Dionysius Skytobrachion placed the Gorgons in modern-day Libya.

In Popular Culture

20th-century feminists reevaluated the representation of Medusa in literature and modern culture. Medusa has been used as the logo for the fashion company Versace, and her name is often used in ways that imply her abilities or the meaning of evil, rather than being directly connected to the mythological figure. The image of Medusa has been adopted as a symbol of female rage and is widely recognized in modern popular culture in relation to women's anger.
