Origin & Background

Scylla first appears in Greek mythology in Homer's 'Odyssey', where the story of her transformation from a beautiful nymph into a monster is told. The accounts of Scylla's parents vary among different authors, but both Homer and Ovid mention her mother as Crataeis, while her father is referred to as Triton or Phorcys.

The Legend

Scylla is said to live on one side of a narrow strait, facing the monster Charybdis, who swallows the sea, and is known for devouring humans. She begins as a beautiful woman but transforms into a monster due to jealousy. In Homer's 'Odyssey', Odysseus encounters her and Charybdis, and she devours six of his sailors.

Variants

The legend of Scylla has been adapted differently in various texts. For example, in Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', she is loved by Glaucus but is transformed into a monster by the jealous witch Circe. Similar accounts are also found in Hyginus's stories.

In Popular Culture

The story of Scylla has inspired European painters since the Renaissance, and her tale with Glaucus has been depicted in various works. Notably, modern interpretations exist, such as Jean-Marie Leclair's opera 'Scylla et Glaucus'.
