Origin & Background

In Greek mythology, the Minotaur is a mythical creature that resides at the center of a complex labyrinth designed by the architect Daedalus and his son Icarus, under the orders of King Minos of Crete. The Minotaur is depicted as having the body of a man and the head and tail of a bull. According to tradition, the people of Athens had to sacrifice 14 young noble citizens (7 boys and 7 girls) to the Minotaur every 9 years as retribution for the death of Minos's son, Androgeus.

The Legend

The Minotaur is a being born from the unfortunate union of man and beast, characterized by its nature of living by consuming humans. It was trapped in the labyrinth of Crete and was ultimately slain by the Athenian hero Theseus. With the help of Minos's daughter Ariadne, Theseus navigates the labyrinth and, after defeating the Minotaur, returns to Athens.

In Popular Culture

The Minotaur is represented in various forms in modern popular culture. For example, it appears in Dante's 'Divine Comedy,' and its story is addressed in several literary works, films, and video games. The Minotaur also appears in modern fantasy novels such as Rick Riordan's 'Percy Jackson & the Olympians.'
