The Legend

The horses of Diomedes are known in Greek mythology as a group of man-eating horses. They belonged to King Diomedes of Thrace, who was the son of Ares and Cyrene, and lived along the Black Sea coast. These horses are described as very extravagant, wild, and uncontrollable beings. Their mad behavior is believed to stem from their abnormal diet of consuming the flesh of guests or strangers who come to the island. Some legends say that these horses would breathe fire when they exhaled. The horses of Diomedes were once chained in a bronze trough in the now-lost city of Tiryns, and they were named Podargos (swift), Lampon (shining), Xanthos (blonde), and Deinos (or Deina, terrible).
