Origin & Background
Cadmus is a legendary figure in ancient Greek mythology, known as the founder of Thebes in Boeotia, and is said to be the son of Agenor, the king of Phoenicia, and Queen Telephassa. He is also a descendant of Poseidon and Libya, and is the brother of Europa, Phoenix, and Silix.
The Legend
Cadmus is the figure who set out to find Europa after she was abducted by Zeus. He is credited with founding or rebuilding Thebes, and an acropolis named Cadmeia was established in his honor. Additionally, he is known for founding several cities in Illyria. Cadmus is recognized as the person who traced the origins of the Greek alphabet back to the Phoenician script, and according to Herodotus, he is believed to have lived around 2000 BC.
