The Legend
In Greek mythology, Althaemenes is known as the prince of Crete, the only son of King Catreus of Crete. He is the brother of Apemosyne, Aerope, and Clymene. Althaemenes accidentally kills his father, fulfilling a prophecy. Hearing the prophecy that he was destined to kill his father, Althaemenes flees Crete for Rhodes with many followers to avoid this fate. He sets up an altar to Zeus Atabyrius on Mount Atabyros (present-day Ataviro). Later, Catreus sails the seas in search of his son and arrives in Rhodes, where a fight breaks out, and Althaemenes unknowingly kills his father with his spear. Realizing what he has done, Althaemenes wanders in sorrow and eventually dies. Subsequently, the people of Rhodes honor him as a hero according to the prophecy.
