Description

Firefly-form vampire of the Ewe people that preys on children

Origin & Background

The adze is an ancient versatile cutting tool, similar to an axe with a cutting edge positioned perpendicular to the handle. It has been used since the Stone Age for smoothing or carving wood, and in agriculture and horticulture, it is used as a hoe.

The Legend

The adze is depicted in ancient Egyptian art, and while it was initially made of stone, during the Predynastic Period, copper adzes largely replaced those made of stone. Egyptian adzes can be found in museums.

Variants

Various regional variants of the adze exist in Africa, the South Pacific, the Northwest Coast of America, New Guinea, and Melanesia. For example, the Māori adze from New Zealand is primarily made from pounamu sourced from the South Island, and Indigenous peoples of the Northwest Coast of America used adzes for functional construction and art.

In Popular Culture

Modern adzes are made of steel and are used for limited purposes. They are particularly used by restorers who employ traditional adzes in places like the Colonial Williamsburg cultural center in Virginia, USA.
