Origin & Background
The word 'Sphinx' is derived from the ancient Greek word Σφίγξ (Sphígx), which is related to the verb σφίγγειν (sphíngein) meaning 'to squeeze' or 'to tighten.' This name may have originated from the way a lion kills its prey by strangulation. However, historian Susan Wise Bauer suggests that the word 'Sphinx' may be a Greek variation of the Egyptian name 'shesepankh,' which means 'living image' and is more closely related to the statue of the Sphinx.
