Origin & Background
In ancient Egyptian mythology, Sekhmet is considered one of the important goddesses, being the daughter of the sun god Ra. She is known as the goddess of war and medicine. Sekhmet represents the divine power of the sun and is a fierce embodiment of vengeance, earning her the nickname 'Eye of Ra.'
The Legend
Sekhmet has the ability to breathe fire, and the hot winds of the desert are likened to her breath. She is also known for causing plagues, which are sometimes depicted as her servants or messengers. However, she is also called upon to prevent diseases and heal the sick. In one myth, Ra sends the goddess Hathor in the form of Sekhmet to punish the humans who have rebelled against him. Even after the battle, Sekhmet's thirst for blood does not subside, leading her to rampage through Egypt and nearly annihilate humanity. To stop her, Ra and the other gods pour beer dyed with red ochre into a lake, tricking Sekhmet into thinking it is blood. Sekhmet drinks all the beer and becomes intoxicated, ceasing her violence and returning peacefully to Ra.
In Popular Culture
Sekhmet is worshipped by some modern pagans, and her veneration occurs among those who follow goddess spirituality. This worship may include modern statues of Sekhmet or museum collections.
