The term Nachzehrer began to be used in the 19th century, but beliefs about this creature existed centuries earlier. Nachzehrer prominently appeared in the folklore of northern Germany and was also transmitted in Silesia and Bavaria. Additionally, this term was used to describe a similar creature among the Kashubians of northern Poland.

The Legend

In German folklore, the Nachzehrer is considered a being that means 'after-consumer,' believed to have returned from the grave to attack family members or villagers after recently dying. It was thought that the Nachzehrer had the ability to consume its burial clothes or shrouds, which was seen as a common sign of a Nachzehrer. It was believed that if living people left the deceased's belongings in the grave, the likelihood of becoming a Nachzehrer increased. Signs of a Nachzehrer included open eyes or mouth, red lips, and a soft corpse.
