Description
The Legend
Taowu is a mythical being mentioned in Chinese classics, classified as one of the 'Four Calamities' along with Hundun, Kunpeng, and Taotie. In traditional historical texts, Sima Qian describes Taowu as the son of Zhuanxu, depicting him as a rebellious and destructive character. Taowu is portrayed as lacking abilities, being stubborn, unable to accept education, and difficult to appease. He continuously caused problems during the reign of Emperor Yao and was eventually banished to the outskirts of the kingdom by Emperor Shun along with the other four calamities. Additionally, Taowu is recorded to have resided in Pishan (丕山) during the Shang dynasty. In the "Book of Gods and Strange Things," Taowu is described as a monster with a human face, tiger's paws, a pig's mouth and teeth, and an 18-foot-long tail.
In Popular Culture
Taowu has been used as the name of the celestial body 471325 Taowu and the creature Taowu liui in the genus Makailodon. Additionally, Taowu appears in the 'Shin Megami Tensei' franchise, featuring as a recruitable demon in games such as "Persona 4," "Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner," and "Shin Megami Tensei IV." The description of Taowu in these games is derived from the "Book of Gods and Strange Things."
