The Legend

Kolokolo is known as a malicious, rat-like creature in Mapuche mythology. This creature is initially born from a chicken's egg, then transforms into the form of a snake or lizard, and eventually changes into a feathered rat. Kolokolo lives in caves near people's homes, invading their houses to suck the blood of sleeping residents or lick their saliva and used dishes. As a result, families may suffer from tuberculosis or become severely weakened. Signs that a Kolokolo is present in the home include feeling inexplicably tired or hearing sounds similar to a baby's cry. If Kolokolo is suspected, one should contact a Machi, a shaman, to exorcise it.

Variants

Legends about Kolokolo vary by region. In urban areas from Valparaíso to Concepción, it is said that Kolokolo sucks the blood of humans. In the capital, Santiago, it is reported that Kolokolo repeatedly sucks the saliva of one person, leading to severe weakness and deformity. In Taragante, Kolokolo is described as a black bird, and sucking its saliva is said to be immediately fatal. Near Concepción, Kolokolo is depicted as a small bird similar to a bat, entering rooms at night to suck the saliva of its victims. Additionally, Kolokolo is described as an invisible malicious animal, and its cry is said to resemble 'kolokolo.'
