The Legend
Bäckahästen means 'the horse of the brook' in Swedish and is one of the water spirits that frequently appears in Nordic legends. This creature is primarily described in the form of a white horse and is said to appear near brooks or rivers. A person who rides on Bäckahästen is said to never be able to dismount, and afterward, the horse jumps into the river, drowning others. This creature is also known to deceive people into plowing, which seems to stem from an intention to trick them. The legend of Bäckahästen is passed down in various regions of Sweden, one of which tells the story of a girl working on a farm who encounters Bäckahästen. This girl resists the temptation of Bäckahästen and ultimately succeeds in defeating it.
