The Legend
Pricolici is a Romanian vampire-like creature that possesses characteristics similar to a werewolf. They are said to be transformed from children who are in danger after being weaned from their mother's milk. Pricolici is similar to a vârcolac, but the latter sometimes symbolizes goblins, while Pricolici always has wolf-like features. They have the ability to transform into ordinary people or animals and share similarities with the strigoi, the souls of the dead. Strigoi have human-like physical characteristics before death, but Pricolici always appear in the form of a wolf or dog. It is said that malicious and violent men often return as Pricolici after death to harm other humans.
In Popular Culture
Even in modern times, many people living in rural areas of Romania claim to have been brutally attacked by abnormally large and fierce wolves. These wolves attack quietly and unexpectedly, targeting solitary individuals. Victims of such attacks often assert that their attackers are not ordinary wolves but have returned as Pricolici. Pricolici is also known as a bipedal werewolf, which distinguishes it from the traditional four-legged large wolf appearance of werewolves.
