Origin & Background

Ayelala is a goddess originating from the area inhabited by the Yoruba (Ilaje and Ikale sub-groups) and the Ijaw (Apoi sub-group) people in southwestern Nigeria, widely known as the goddess of justice and retribution. According to one legend, she was a slave woman sacrificed by the Ilaje people in an attempt to reconcile with the Ijaw people, and she met a tragic fate due to the discord between the two communities. She was buried at the boundary of the two regions with water and various charms, and over time, she came to be worshipped as the goddess of justice. In another story, she is said to be a princess of Ode-Ichekiri, who married the chief of Ilaje but lost her life due to a conspiracy after being accused of adultery by her husband and his relatives. She eventually transforms into a powerful Orisha who emerges from her grave to seek justice.
