Origin & Background

The term Xtabay refers to the ancient Maya goddess Ixtab, who is known as the goddess of suicide by hanging or the gallows. In Perez's Maya dictionary, 'Ix' is a female prefix, and 'tab', 'taab', 'tabil' translates to 'rope used for a specific purpose'. Ixtab was considered a merciful goddess who guides those who take their own lives to heaven, as suicide was regarded as an honorable death.
