Description

Origin & Background

Manpasikjeok is a legendary flute of Silla, said to have been made from bamboo sent by the sea dragon and the heavenly gods during the reign of King Sinmun. In the second year of King Sinmun's reign (682 AD), the nobleman Pak Sukcheong saw a small mountain floating in the East Sea and reported it to King Sinmun, who then had a divination performed. The fortune teller said that King Munmu and Kim Yushin were going to provide a treasure to protect the country, and King Sinmun went out to the sea to obtain bamboo. He then made a flute from the bamboo and designated it as a national treasure.

The Legend

It is said that Manpasikjeok causes the enemy to retreat, heals illnesses, brings rain during droughts, clears up monsoons, calms the winds, and soothes the waves. This flute is known to mean 'the flute that calms all waves' and was regarded as a national treasure of Silla. After King Sinmun made the flute from bamboo and kept it in Cheonjongo of Wolseong, various legends and stories began to be passed down.
