The Legend
In the Persian epic 'Shahnameh', Div-e Sepid (디브 세피드) appears as the leader of the demons (Divs) of Mazandaran. He is a colossal being, possessing great physical strength and skilled in magic and necromancy. He uses his magical powers to summon a dark storm made of hail, rocks, and tree trunks to destroy the army of Kai Kabus. Afterwards, he captures Kai Kabus and his commanders, knights, blinding them and imprisoning them. The legendary Persian hero Rostam performs 'Seven Labors' to rescue his master. Ultimately, Rostam defeats Div-e Sepid and heals the blindness of the king and the captured Persian heroes with his heart and blood. Rostam is also depicted wearing the head of the Div as a helmet, often shown in that guise.
Variants
In the Shahnameh, it is said that Div-e Sepid has a son. This epic tells the story of Shabrang, the son of Div-e Sepid, who attacks Iran to avenge his father's death at the hands of Rostam. Shabrang is born with characteristics similar to the Div and attacks Mazandaran, killing Aulard, who ruled Mazandaran under Rostam's command. He leads an army alongside his mother Mahiyar to fight against Iran but is ultimately defeated by the heroes of Iran and flees to Turan.
