The Legend

Bahamut is a monster located deep beneath the structure that supports the Earth, according to Zakariya al-Qazwini. In this worldview, the Earth is supported by an angel standing on a plate made of jewels, and this plate is sometimes supported by a cosmic beast (cow) known as Kuyutha. Bahamut carries this cow on its back and floats in water for its stability. Bahamut is also known by the modified name 'Balhūt.' In early sources, the name 'Lutīyā' appears, with Balhūt used as a nickname and Bahamut as a pseudonym.

In Popular Culture

Bahamut appears in various forms in modern popular culture. In the tabletop role-playing game 'Dungeons & Dragons,' Bahamut is depicted as the dragon god of justice, marking the first recorded instance of the name being used to refer to dragons. In the collectible card game 'Rage of Bahamut' and its animated adaptation, Bahamut is portrayed as an ancient dragon capable of destroying the world. In the 'Final Fantasy' video game series, Bahamut is one of the most prominent summons and appears in nearly every installment.
