Ördög (in Old Hungarian Ürdüng) is a shape-shifting demonic entity originating from Hungarian mythology and early Hungarian pagan beliefs, serving the role of controlling the dark and evil forces of the world. After Christianization, he became equated with the devil. In Hungarian mythology, it is said that God (Isten) received the help of Ördög when creating the world.

The Legend

Ördög is generally depicted in a form similar to a satyr or faun, possessing the upper body of a human male and the lower body of a goat. He is usually pitch-black in color, has split hooves, sheep-like horns, a long tail ending in a blade, and wields a pitchfork. He can also be distinguished by an excessively large penis. Ördög resides in the underworld or hell (Pokol), constantly stirring a massive cauldron filled with the souls of the damned. However, it is uncertain whether the underworld was considered a place of punishment in pre-Christian Hungarian mythology. When he appears on Earth, according to some legends, he hides within the walls of his victims, making high-pitched or squeaky sounds, while other legends describe him appearing in the form of a Hungarian shepherd with a fox, dark flames, or dark, shining eyes. His habit is to gamble with humans to check if they fall into corruption. His long-term goal is to collect more human souls (lelkek).
