Origin & Background

In British folklore, Black Shuck, Old Shuck, Old Shock, or simply Shuck refers to a ghostly black dog that roams the coasts and countryside of East Anglia. This entity is one of several black dogs recorded in folklore across the British Isles, including those from Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire Fen, and Essex. Descriptions of Black Shuck vary, and it is sometimes recorded as an omen of death, while in other cases, it is depicted as a companion. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the name 'Shuck' is derived from the Old English word 'scucca,' which means 'devil, evil spirit.' The name 'Black Shuck' was first printed in 1850 in the journal 'Notes and Queries' by Rev. E. S. Taylor, where it was referred to as 'Shuck the Dog-fiend.'

The Legend

Descriptions of Black Shuck's appearance and nature vary. In some cases, it is described in the form of a large dog, while in others, it is depicted as the size of a calf or horse. W. A. Dutt described this creature in his 1901 work 'Highways & Byways in East Anglia' as 'taking the form of a gigantic black dog, prowling along dark roads and lonely paths in the fields. Its howl freezes the blood of those who hear it, but its footsteps are completely silent.' Encountering Black Shuck is said to bring misfortune, and meeting it is also said to warn of death before the end of the year.

Variants

In Littleport, Cambridgeshire, there are two other legends associated with Black Shuck folklore. Local folklorist W.H. Barrett recounts a story of a giant black dog that roams the area after dying while saving a local girl before the Reformation, while another folklorist, Enid Porter, tells of a black dog that wanders the A10 road after the protagonist drowned in the nearby Great Ouse River in the 1800s.

In Popular Culture

The British rock band The Darkness included a song titled 'Black Shuck' on their debut album 'Permission to Land' in 2003. In 'Teen Wolf,' an ancient hellhound spirit appears and is referred to by one of the protagonists as 'Black Shuck.' In the 2020 video game 'Assassin's Creed: Valhalla,' it appears as a mini-boss that can be encountered while exploring the countryside of East Anglia, and it also features in the 2020 stop-motion animated horror film 'Curse of the Black Shuck' released by Troma.
