Origin & Background
Beast of Gévaudan (French: La Bête du Gévaudan) is a historical name for a carnivorous animal or animals that attacked people in the Gévaudan region of France from 1764 to 1767 (now part of Lozère and Haute-Loire). This area is located in the Margeride Mountains.
The Legend
The Beast of Gévaudan is described as one or several beasts with tawny or reddish-brown fur, dark stripes, and a long-haired tail. This beast is said to have powerful fangs and claws, and appeared to be the size of a calf or cow, reportedly attacking its victims by leaping at them. Witnesses at the time claimed that this beast could be identified as a striped hyena, large wolf, large dog, or wolfdog, but its true identity remains controversial.
In Popular Culture
The Beast of Gévaudan is the main theme of the 1985 French video game 'La Bête du Gévaudan'. The 2001 action film 'Brotherhood of the Wolf', directed by Christophe Gans, is based on this legend. Netflix is set to produce a feature film created by Blumhouse Productions. The 2022 film 'The Cursed' depicts this beast as a curse brought upon a French village by a gypsy in the late 19th century. In 2022, the German power metal band Powerwolf released a single titled 'Beast of Gévaudan'. The MTV series 'Teen Wolf' features 'La Bête du Gévaudan' as a main antagonist in the second part of the fifth season, reconstructing the original legend in the episode 'Maid of Gevaudan'.
