The Legend

In Greek mythology, Geryon is depicted as a fearsome giant residing on the mythical island of Erytheia, located far to the west of the Mediterranean. He is generally described as a monster with three bodies and three heads, or three heads and one body, or three bodies and one head. Geryon primarily takes on a human form, possessing features such as wings or multiple bodies. He is famous for guarding his cattle. His parents are Chrysaor and Callirrhoe, and he is the grandson of Medusa and the nephew of Pegasus.

In Popular Culture

The myth of Geryon is connected to the nation-building of Spain and Portugal, and he was considered an inhabitant of the Iberian Peninsula. Medieval writers sought to justify Geryon's resistance against Greek invaders. In Alfonso X's 'Estoria de España', it is said that Hercules killed the giant Geryon and erected a tower to commemorate his victory by cutting off his head. The Tower of Hercules in La Coruña, Spain, is actually a reconstruction of a Roman lighthouse.
