The Legend
Cegua is a supernatural being that appears in the folklore of Central America and Mexico, typically transforming into an attractive woman with long hair. She lures men into danger and then reveals her face as that of a horse or a skull. Cegua primarily entices lonely men, leading them into deep canyons or dark forests, causing them to stray from their intended path. She often appears bathing in public pools or by rivers, initially concealing her face. If the victim does not die of fear, they become insane from her appearance. When she appears to children, she transforms into the child's mother to lure them, and the child who comes into contact with her goes mad, after which she takes the child to a remote place and makes them disappear.
Variants
Cegua is known as Ciguanaba in El Salvador, Cigua in Honduras, and Siguanaba in Guatemala. Although the names differ, the appearance and behavior of Cegua do not vary significantly across regions. For example, in Guatemala, she is depicted washing her hair with a golden bowl and combing it with a golden comb, appearing as an alluring figure to men. In Mexico, she is referred to as Macihuatli, and her characteristic is transforming from an attractive woman to a horse's face.
