Origin & Background
Auguste Chapdelaine was born on February 6, 1814, on a farm in La Rochelle-Normandy, France. In the year he turned 20, he entered the seminary in Coutances, and was ordained as a priest in the diocese of Coutances in 1843. He joined the Paris Foreign Missions Society in 1851, and in April 1852, he departed from Antwerp to participate in Catholic missions in Guangxi Province, China.
The Legend
Chapdelaine was arrested on February 22, 1856, while serving as a Catholic missionary in China. He was charged with inciting rebellion, and after refusing to pay a bribe, he was subjected to brutal torture and subsequently executed. His death was used as a pretext for France's involvement in the Second Opium War.
In Popular Culture
Chapdelaine was canonized in 1900, and on October 1, 2000, he was canonized by Pope John Paul II along with 120 Christian martyrs who were martyred in China from the 17th to the 20th century.
