Kongamato
Description
Pterosaur-like flying creature of the Congo swamps with leathery wings and sharp beak. Capsizes canoes and attacks fishermen. Name means 'breaker of boats'
The Legend
Kongamato means 'the one who overturns boats' and is said to have been sighted by locals and researchers in the Ziundundu swamp of the Miwinyilunga region in western Zambia. This creature has been suggested to be a modern-day Rhamphorhynchus, an unidentified large bird (e.g., a very large and unusual stork) or a gigantic bat. The Kongamato is reported to have a wingspan of about 1.20 meters to 2.10 meters, with no feathers and smooth red or black skin, along with a beak that has long teeth. Locals named this creature 'the one who overwhelms boats' as it is said to overturn fishermen's canoes. Additionally, it is believed to bring death to those who gaze upon it.
