Penanggal is a nocturnal vampire entity originating from Malay legend, depicted as a floating female head with organs and intestines hanging from the neck. The name is derived from the Malay word 'tanggal,' which means 'to detach.'
The Legend
Penanggal is a being that floats with a separated female head and organs, primarily active at night, hunting the blood of menstruating or birthing women. Penanggal is originally considered a human woman who can take on this form through a ritual of submerging in vinegar and meditating. During the day, she returns to being an ordinary woman, but she can be distinguished from regular women by the smell of vinegar.
Variants
Penanggal is known by various names in different regions of Southeast Asia. In Cambodia, it is called Ahp; in Laos, Kasu; in Thailand, Krasue; in Indonesia, Leyak; and in the Philippines, Manananggal.
In Popular Culture
Penanggal appears as a monster in the 1981 Dungeons & Dragons rulebook 'Fiend Folio,' and is also featured in the Indonesian horror film 'Mystics in Bali' and the third season episode 'Drug Traffic' of the American anthology TV series 'Creepshow.'
